So sad. RIP
Heartbroken tributes have been paid to a much-loved firefighter who helped save hundreds of lives during his career.
"Me and my mum live quite close to him and we just noticed that he was just repeating things and sadly, it got really bad last year where he started going outside not dressed and things like that," Nicole added. "People would ring us like, your dad or your grandad is there. Ray lived with his wife in Baxenden for many years, before the pair both moved to a care home last December. Unfortunately, Ray's wife and Nicole's grandma also received a Alzheimer's diagnosis too.
"He was always selling eggs to people, knocking on their doors or just going into their houses sometimes, just to give them eggs," Nicole chuckles. "He was definitely a character. Remembering her grandad, Nicole sad: "He was just really really chatty and really friendly. Somebody commented on hte post I put on the 'Baxenden - A Great Place to Live' page, saying that one of the really nice things about Ray was that when everyone is rushing around and we're all so busy, he'd find a way to make you stop and listen - it'd be pointless, but it would be a way to make you slow down.
On June 5, Ray passed away - 11 days before his 82nd birthday and only days before Father's Day. On the weekend he passed away, Nicole undertook a 26-mile walk in the Lake District, along with her friend who also lost her grandad in a similar way, in order to raise awareness and money for the Alzheimer's Society.
