The Hawks defeated Palmer 4-2 on Saturday to capture the program’s eighth state title.
WASILLA — A year ago, Houston hockey coach Lane Styers’ comments about his team would have seemed improbable — even outlandish. But Styers knew the team’s winless 2020-21 season didn’t tell the entire story.
The Division II title bout was the third time that the two opponents faced each other this season with Houston completing the series sweep with a combined margin of victory of 10-4. While it is often hard to beat the same team three times in one season, Styers had his team ready to complete the trifecta heading into the game.
“This is the first time that we’ve won in this new era where the whole Kenai Peninsula is allowed along with Homer and some bigger schools,” said Styers. “It’s the biggest state championship that Houston has ever had for sure. “They’re studs and unbelievable hockey players as freshmen at 14 and 15 years old,” said Styers about Matveev and Efimov. “They came in and made varsity right away which was a huge boost for us.”
The two teams went into the second period tied at one goal apiece before Houston capitalized on a power play while Palmer had a pair of players in the penalty box. Kenov’s second goal of the game gave the Hawks a 2-1 leading into the third period.
