The shift toward social conservatism was most pronounced among Republicans and independents. Seventy-four percent of Republicans now say they are “very conservative” or “conservative” when it comes to cultural debates — a 14-point increase from 2021. And among independents, 29% now say they identify as social conservatives compared to 24% two years ago.
The poll also identified one of the causes of this shift: radical gender ideology, especially insofar as it affects women’s sports and private spaces. Sixty-nine percent of respondents, including 48% of Democrats and 67% of independents, said transgender athletes should be required to play on the sports team that matches their biological sex — up from 62% in 2021.
Whether the issue of gender ideology will be enough finally to dethrone the Left is another question. But certainly this is a losing issue, and the Left’s insistence otherwise speaks to its insufferable hubris.
