Transformers: Rise of the Beasts nabs a hard-won opening weekend win, taking No. 1 over the high-performing Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
Transformers: Rise of the Beasts has pulled off a box office coup in its opening weekend. The film, which premiered in theaters on June 9, is the seventh entry in the live-action Transformers movie series, an offshoot of the larger media franchise of toys and cartoons that began in the 1980s. The new film follows two human archaeologists who find themselves in the middle of a war for the fate of Earth between Unicron and the Autobots, who must team up with the Maximals for an epic battle.

This wasn't a given, as throughout the weekend it jockeyed for supremacy with the hit animated movie Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which is currently in its second week. That movie ended up taking second place with a whopping $55.5 million.
Is This Weekend's Box Office Bout What the Whole Summer Will Look Like? Ever since theaters reopened after shutting down during the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, a box office bout like this has been a relatively rare occurrence. Tentpole blockbusters have taken longer to produce and thus have come out at a less frequent rate in recent years. This has allowed quite a movies to debut at No. 1 that might not have otherwise had the opportunity.
However, this summer may feature many more neck-and-neck races to the top of the charts. This year's much more crowded summer slate includes several weekends where major wide releases will coincide, including the notorious simultaneous Barbie and Oppenheimer premiere in July.
