The new Transformers comic series from Robert Kirkman and Skybound Entertainment had a choice to make with two iconic characters' color schemes.
The Transformers are returning to comics this fall thanks to Robert Kirkman's Skybound Entertainment and their new Energon Universe, but from advanced material for Transformers #1, it appears the new publisher of the Robots in Disguise is keeping one controversial mistake from the original cartoon: the color scheme of Decepticon Soundwave.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Transformers #1 – written by Daniel Warren Johnson – brings the Autobots and Decepticons into Skybound's Energon Universe shared continuity, alongside G.I. Joe, and Skybound originals such as Void Rivals, the debut issue of which ended with the shocking appearance of Jetfire from the Transformers universe.
"Frenzy Is Red, Rumble Is Blue" Mistakes were common among early Transformers toys, given that there were several repaints and reuses early in the franchise's run. Sometimes, changes between the toys and cartoon were necessary, such as the original toys for Ratchet and Ironhide, whose robot modes lacked heads, and were redesigned to be more humanoid robots. The redesigned cartoon versions have subsequently become the definitive iterations of the characters.
There are two acronyms in Transformers fandom related to this "controversy." Cartoon purists use FIRRIB to describe their preferred version of Soundwave’s Mini-cons, while those preferring the original Hasbro toys say FIBRIR, to make their point. By choosing Rumble's blue color scheme, Skybound and Daniel Warren Johnson have made it clear their main point of reference for the Energon Universe Transformers is the classic G1 cartoon.
