‘Either by accident or design [the documentary] misled the trans and non-binary participants as to the true nature of the film' Channel 4 has been accused of ‘unethical behaviour’ over its editing of Professor Kathleen Stock's new documentary Gender Wars
The film aims to look at the question, ‘What is a woman?’, and hears from people who believe gender is biological sex that can’t be changed, and those who see gender as an identity that can be determined by individuals., who quit her role at the University of Sussex in 2021 following protests from students and accusations of transphobia, provides narration and tells her side of the story.
‘It was only on seeing the first preview, in late April, that we become aware of the true nature of the film. On seeing the previews [we are] all shocked and have expressed our dismay and anger to those responsible. That has led to minor edits, but they are insufficient to change the primary narrative arc of the film,’ reads the letter.It added: ‘Either by accident or design [the documentary] misled the trans and non-binary participants as to the true nature of the film.
‘In the documentary, we hear Kathleen’s narration, and it shows protestors at her university. They don’t include me talking about the protestors at my university,’ he told us.
