'They talk about Blackpool being left behind - we're being left behind inside it,' one seaside resort business owner told LancsLive ahead of the Illuminations switch-on
Anyone who’s engaged in awkward small talk recently will likely have heard that ‘we never really had a summer this year’. Either way, with children heading back to school, it officially feels more and more like the season is now drawing to a close.
Council bosses remain upbeat about the town’s fortunes, with major investment coming through a Town Deal which will see the 'world-class visitor attraction' £300m rated Blackpool Central built after the courts are relocated. The funding will also go towards creating a Multiversity Campus, building new roads to open up Blackpool Airport Enterprise Zone, and building a youth hub.
For Mrs Johnsons Emporium owner Susanne Johnson, that success has been in spite of a location which is surrounded by boarded up shops and anti-social behaviour. Susanne took over the business from her dad 12 years ago but is now considering moving away entirely. She said: “We’re one street back from the Prom which is a perfect place for cafes and shops. It’s a perfect place for independent businesses but that isn’t happening at all.
People continue to visit the fish and chip shops, buy rock and novelty items from a plethora of stores as well as drinking and dancing through the night. Sandwiched between a joke shop and the much loved Notarianni’s Ices, Brook Collectibles serves a market which is simultaneously niche and highly lucrative.
Speaking of the shop’s trade this year said: “I kind of planned for disaster really because since Covid we had two very good years where people had come to Blackpool and seen it in a different light because there were restrictions on where they could go and the weather was good. While efforts are being made to ensure Blackpool is busy all year round, Brooks will be one of the many stores which does not stay open through the winter. “We’ve got to be here when the business is here,” Mark explained.
Mr Smith said: “I don’t think we give it the priority it deserves. In many countries it has a department all of its own and we spend less on promotion of the UK as a destination than many of our rivals, for example we spend a lot less than Ireland now.
