Energy firms have been told to 'voluntarily' stop forcing customers onto prepayment meters, but MPs say 'writing letters is not enough'

Investigation

With suppliers standing their ground ahead of a meeting with ministers – and warning that all household bills could increase if the controversial meters are banned – the regulator Ofgem said on MondayEd Miliband, Labour’s Shadow secretary for climate change and net zero, criticised Mr Shapps’ lack of stronger action in an urgent question in the Commons. Mr Shapps was not at the dispatch box when the question was asked.

Conservative MP Richard Graham also urged ministers to work with energy companies to reduce the number of prepayment meter warrants issued. Another Conservative backbencher, Ruth Edwards, said she was “incredibly concerned” to hear reports of vulnerable customers being moved on to the meters. It said: “The Government must now ban energy companies from forcibly putting customers onto prepayment meters, which is cutting off lifesaving heating and electricity.”

Ofgem chief executive Jonathan Brearley earlier told energy industry executives at a summit they need do more to tackle the issue of prepayment meters following Mr Shapps’s intervention.
