Chaim Topol, the legendary Israeli actor known for the stage and screen versions of Fiddler on the Roof, has passed away at the age of 87.
Chaim Topol, star of Fiddler on the Roof, has died at 87. Known mononymously as Topol, the legendary Israeli actor is best known for starring as Tevye in the stage and screen versions of Fiddler on the Roof. Though he has many stage and screen credits to his name over the years, including Flash Gordon and For Your Eyes Only, Topol had been mostly absent from the public eye in recent years due to Alzheimer’s disease.
Now, after a long battle with the illness, Topol has passed away in Israel at the age of 87, his representative confirmed to CNN. Shortly after his death, a number of notable Israeli figures paid tribute to Topol and conveyed condolences, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu who called the actor a “multi-faceted artist with great charisma and energy" whose "contribution to Israeli culture will live on for generations.
While Topol will always be known as Tevye, the actor also starred as Dr. Hans Zarkov in the 1980 Flash Gordon film and a year later as the Greek smuggler Milos Columbo in Roger Moore's James Bond movie For Your Eyes Only. Before passing away, Topol’s last feature credit was the Holocaust film Left Luggage from 1998.
