Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski has opened up about actor Val Kilmer's return to the series. Top Gun: Maverick is the long awaited sequel to the 1986 hit Top Gun, helmed by Tony Scott, which tells the tale of students in the Navy's elite fighter weapons school who are all competing for the top spot in the class.
After nearly thirty six years of waiting, Top Gun: Maverick is just around the corner, with a release date set for May 27. Cruise will be returning as Maverick, and, perhaps more excitingly, Kilmer will be returning as his fellow pilot, Iceman. While Kilmer has been consistently acting since his career took off in the '80s and '90s, he has focused mainly on smaller projects for several years now, while Cruise has still churned out blockbuster after blockbuster.
That was a huge, huge get — having Val come back to play Iceman. To get to work with an actor of that caliber, to see the chemistry, the camaraderie between him and Tom, and to have those two characters reunite in this film, was a really special moment, and one of my favorite parts of the film. Of course, to hear this news straight from the director of Top Gun: Maverick will likely be very exciting for fans. Anticipation can only be growing at this point, as it has been nearly four years since Kilmer's return to the series was confirmed, and after enduring lengthy pandemic-related delays, the movie is finally around the corner. While there have still been no details revealed about Iceman's Top Gun: Maverick role, viewers will not have to wait long to find out.
With over thirty years worth of anticipation built up around the new movie, along with its promise to bring back many characters from the original Top Gun, Top Gun: Maverick will certainly have some large boots to fill. However, Kosinski's excitement about the film certainly is a good sign that the new movie will be something special.
