Forum at Grove City College, sponsored by Newsmax, gave Republican hopefuls a chance to reach a national conservative audience.

In this photo combination of images taken in 2022, are Republican candidates for U.S. Senate, from top left, Kathy Barnette, Jeff Bartos and Dave McCormick, and Mehmet Oz, bottom left, and Carla Sands. The five debated in Harrisburg, Pa., for a debate on Monday, April 25, 2022. It was one last chance to close the sale to a conservative audience Wednesday night.

For the record, McCormick grew up in Bloomsburg and lived in Pennsylvania until he left for the U.S. Military Academy following high school. He then served in the Army for several years, including combat in Iraq, before launching his business career in Pittsburgh, and then serving in former President George W. Bush’s Treasury Department.

Sands grew up in Cumberland County and as an adult moved to California to pursue an acting career. Marriage and business kept her there, though she retuned to Pennsylvania last year after her service in Denmark. McCormick called that an inadequate answer, citing the same 2019 interview. “This is something that you have to deal with Mehmet, because you’ve got a track record that’s completely the opposite of the positions you’re saying now and the Pennsylvania voters need to know” where he really stands.

“My employees, by the way, were in Pennsylvania,” Bartos interjected as the debate moved on. “His were in Connecticut.”Barnette - a Black woman who has centered her campaign on her American Dream success story and the need to save that possibility for the generations to come - accused McCormick and Oz of being “globalists,” who won’t be true to America First policies.

All the candidates had sought the former president’s endorsement. Oz got it and will get the benefit of it at a Friday night rally with Trump in Greensburg, Westmoreland County.
