The musical adaptation of Tootsie is ending its musical run after less than a year
, which opened on Broadway in April, is ending its run after less than a year in New York.
The production on Monday announced that it will be closing in January after 25 previews and 293 regular performances at New York's Marquis Theatre. The final performance is set for Jan. 5.Tootsie will launch a North American tour at Shea's Buffalo Theater in Buffalo, New York. The production is also hashing out plans for several international runs, details of which will be announced at a later date.was originally expected to be a long-running success. With a capitalization of around $20 million, relatively high for a musical, the show earned generally positive reviews and two Tony Awards — for book writer Robert Horn and lead actor Santino Fontana.
The show has played to around 70 percent capacity in recent months, with cumulative box office over 33 weeks at $31.2 million. Producers may be able to recoup part of their initial investment over the holiday season, which is the most lucrative time of the year for Broadway, but the show seems certain to close in the red.
