In the middle of the pandemic, Tony’s Italian Ristorante was struck by a huge loss on the heels of the Columbus Brewery District restaurant’s 40Antonio Stanley, the restaurant's chef and an employee of 32 years, died at age 53.
"The pandemic felt like a jab. And him dying was like a big punch," said Scartz."We didn't want to close the restaurant under those circumstances. He would not have wanted that." Rivera, who moved from Mexico to the United States a few years ago, quickly embraced the traditional Italian recipes at Tony’s and the hands-on approach of the kitchen.Over the years, Scartz has changed the interior but kept the food generally the same, and he asserts that the consistency of his menu has been key to its survival. Tony's fettuccini, one of the restaurant's longest-running menu items, is the restaurant's best-selling dish both 40 years ago and still.
