The former Prime Minister added that “there remain irreconcilable elements in Northern Ireland”, urged the DUP to return to power sharing at Stormont and to “put the interests of the people first” 🔴 DavidParsley50 reports

should return to power sharing in the Northern Ireland Assembly at Stormont to ensure the peace deal survives.and leaders of nationalist and loyalist parties in Northern Ireland, Blair was at the heart of what is also known as the Belfast Agreement, which celebrates its 25th anniversary on Monday.

While the peace may have largely held in the 25 years since the agreement was signed, UK security services have recently raised the threat level in Northern Ireland from substantial to severe, meaning an attack is highly likely. Sir Tony Blair urged DUP leader Sir Jeffrey Donaldson to return to power sharing at the Northern Ireland Assembly Sinn Féin claimed the most seats in last May’s electionsFollowing the elections, the DUP abstained in the vote to elect a speaker in Stormont, resulting in the Assembly’s collapse.

“Frequently it looked like all was lost only for it to be rescued. I probably had six to eight hours sleep over the whole three days.” The UK Government and the EU unveiled the framework earlier this year to mitigate many of the trading difficulties caused by the Northern Ireland Protocol. “We would very much prefer to restore local ministers to their place but, clearly, we cannot allow things to go on very much longer with the current arrangements because it is not a sustainable basis to be asking officials to take difficult decisions without ministers in place.

It is understood that 3,720 people were killed over the next 30 years, mostly by paramilitary groups on both sides such as the Irish Republican Army and pro-British Protestant groups usually known as “loyalists”. The talks frequently appeared to be on the brink of collapse. Sir Tony and Irish Taoiseach Bertie Ahern joined the participants at Stormont during the final days, with negotiations running through the night from on Thursday 9 April.

Britain committed to holding a referendum if it appeared likely that a majority might vote for Irish unity, while Ireland agreed to amend its constitution to remove its territorial claim to Northern Ireland.
