Sir Tony Blair has said the BBC should get better at defending itself, following the crisis-ridden week for the corporation.

The former prime minister was speaking in the aftermath of the scandal centred on newsreader, who was identified as the high-profile presenter facing allegations of paying a teenager for sexually explicit photographs.

It was several days after the publication of accusations in the Sun that his wife Vicky Flind named him and said he was receiving treatment in hospital forAsked about the impact of the scandal for the BBC in an interview with Sky’s Sophy Ridge on Sunday programme, Sir Tony expressed his support. He said: ‘I think it’s a great British institution. And I… I mean, of course these things will hit them from time to time but I don’t think it means that the whole of the BBC is now a bad institution.‘And also, by the way, abroad the BBC is still regarded as an important British institution, and given our need to make sure we keep as much of a position of power in the world as we can, so whatever my disagreements from time to time, I still basically support it.
