Texas Republicans boost electric vehicles with bipartisan laws for charging stations
Again, the bill passed the Senate on a bipartisan 28-3 vote., which levies a $200 a year fee on electric vehicles instead of the fuel tax imposed on internal combustion engines. The fee makes up for the state’s lost income from the highway fund.last week. The proposed law would require charging stations to supply adaptors so that any EV can use them. Currently, Tesla has a proprietary charging plug incompatible with other automakers.
When lawmakers put aside petty politics and crony capitalism, they can make Texas a better place. After weeks of columns railing against bad bills, I thought it was time to give a shout-out to some good ones. These measures remove barriers for the private sector to deliver what Texans need, in this case, more EV charging stations. They also fit the conservative philosophy of promoting competition and encouraging private-sector innovation.
Electric vehicle charging is not the only area where the Republican-controlled Legislature has shown leadership.through to the House, where the new law would create more mental health hospital beds in Texas if approved. Republicans plan to invest $3.5 billion in the mental health system, where 2,500 Texans are on waiting lists for services.
Kolkhorst and other Republican leaders are working on a dozen health care bills that would make prices more transparent, require doctors and hospitals to send simple-to-read bills, and slow mergers and acquisitions that concentrate health services in the hands of a few corporations.
