Known for his hard-charging style, the Sony Pictures Studios longtimer is starting to breathe new life into the long-suffering SPE. Tom Rothman was recognized as part of 2018's Variety500 presented by VZMediaPlatform
The veteran Hollywood exec was made chair of Sony’s entire movie operation in 2015, tasked with righting a studio in freefall. And there are signs the turnaround is under way. Sony scored with “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” and “Peter Rabbit” and looks like it’ll have a hit with fall’s actioner “Venom,” based on the Marvel Comics alien.
But with Disney’s acquisition of Fox and AT&T’s purchase of Warner Bros., Sony’s rivals keep gaining muscle, putting pressure on Rothman for innovative ways to compete. Key will be Sony’s efforts to fashion a true Spidey universe, as it’s creating standalone films for Kraven, Silver Sable and Silk. Coming in December is “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” the CGI feature centering on biracial superhero Miles Morales.
