Going into MLB trade deadline, the Padres were a significantly better candidate to jump into the wild-card race, as compared to a Mets club that was subpar in runs scored and run prevention.
Because of their National League-leading payrolls and losing win-loss records, it’s often that the Mets and Padres are lumped together.Discard the notion that because the Mets recently sold off a few stars the Padres should’ve done the same, in effect folding their poker hand on the 2023 season ahead of Tuesday’s trade deadline.
Where the Padres led the league in run prevention, a statistic that typically correlates to a glossy win-loss record some 10 to 15 games above .500 this deep into the season, the Mets stood in the NL’s bottom half in both run prevention and runs scored. Entering this week, there was reason to be guardedly bullish on the Padres’ mustering a push for the wild card in part because standout closer Josh Hader has enjoyed full health and logged only 40 innings entering this week. Padres relievers were able to slot into their normal roles behind Hader, and the recent return of set-up righties Robert Suarez and Stephen Wilson further brightened the team’s longshot odds over the final two months.
