treks across a frozen expanse on a mission of triage, trying to rescue at least one small thing as humanity enters its final stage of collapse. Perhaps this is the kind of movie we are going to get more of as the climate crisis goes mostly unaddressed by federal authority, and the fate of our species seems to narrow and narrow into a barely eked-out existence. But it’s still a jolt that the Tom Hanks/sweet lil’ robot movie should present itself in such a despairing tone.
Sapochnik does nice things with the visuals—images of a St. Louis and points west fried and sandy, irradiated and empty. We’ve seen such tableaux before, but there is enough variance and texture into distinguish it, especially because we’ve never encountered Hanks in such an environment. Seeing Hanks beset by ruin is a glum reminder of the actor’s own mortality, and thus ours, and thus our planet’s.
