Q: Every time we head to Sacramento and pass the work being done on Interstate 80 near Vacaville, I wonder what they’re doing. Lots of people travel in the fast lane, but it is right next to the temporary concrete barrier, so I worry about them.A: The work you see being done in the center divide is a project to extend the express lane for 20 miles from Red Top Road in Fairfield to Leisure Town Road in Vacaville.
Even more egregious, Palo Alto Medical in Fremont was doing construction on a new building. A contractor took up all the handicap parking because it was close. I complained to their maintenance/facilities manager. He sort of said he’d look into it, but it didn’t stop. I had appointments on the 2nd floor of one building and could see people struggling to make the walk because they had to park so far away, including elderly, people in wheelchairs.
Lots of times it’s just blown off because people think it’s “free parking,” and “You don’t look handicapped.” I may not look handicapped, but I’ve had both knees and a hip replaced and mobility is an issue for me.A: Organizations and businesses set an important tone by how they handle their handicap parking. Local police, however, are the only ones who can enforce the laws, including in private lots.
Q: Our daughter drives a 2019 Bolt EV. I’ve been using it the past few days. Finding a fast charger in Van Nuys, Sherman Oaks, Canoga Park, Woodland Hills is a nightmare. There are few fast chargers, some are malfunctioning, and some that are listed are in apartment complexes. My husband arrived today in his Tesla 3. We spent an hour looking for a Tesla charger and started out in West Hollywood. The infrastructure in the Bay Area is eons ahead of Southern CA. It’s been a frustrating education.
