The gymnast became the favorite for a gold medal after Biles pulled out of the event.
U.S. gymnast Sunisa Lee took home the gold medal Thursday in the women’s all-around competition—with Brazil’s Rebeca Andrade earning silver—after the competition moved forward without gold-medal favorite Simone Biles as the superstar gymnast bowed out of the competition for her mental health.... [+]Lee earned 57.433 points with Andrade behind at 57.298, while Angelina Melnikova of the Russian Olympic Committee won bronze.
Lee became the favored gymnast for the gold medal after Biles announced Wednesday she would not compete in the all-around competition. U.S. gymnast Jade Carey replaced Biles in the all-around competition, earning eighth place after errors like falling off the balance beam. Lee started strong with a vault that scored higher than her qualifying round, and the gymnast remained neck and neck with Andrade throughout the competition, alternating between first and second places.Lee, 18, is the first Hmong American—an ethnic group hailing from Laos, Vietnam and parts of China—to compete at the Olympics.
