Michael J. Fox, who starred in the original 1985 comedy film Teen Wolf, reflects on the popularity of the franchise all these years later.
Teen Wolf star Michael J. Fox has reflected on the film’s modern fandom. The original film, which stars Fox as a young man whose newfound werewolfism helps him become a basketball star at his high school, debuted the same year as the star’s breakout role in Back to the Future and in some territories was even retitled as Boy from the Future.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Fox recently sat down for an interview with the print edition of Empire Magazine while promoting his new documentary Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie. During their conversation, he reflected on several of his films that have or have not remained in the popular consciousness, including the original Teen Wolf. He joked that the cult behind the movie "needs to be checked.
It seems most likely that the bulk of the interest in the original film comes from viewers of the Teen Wolf series and spin-offs. However, the film's hugely different tone can be somewhat jarring. Although there are recognizable characters at the center of the film including Scott and Stiles , the situations they find themselves in are overtly wacky and cartoonish.
However, the success of the spinoff series created a widespread following that has a sizable faction of younger viewers. That combined with Gen X viewers who have nostalgia for the project could account for the cult behind the original Teen Wolf. Though Fox might not agree with its iconic status, as the progenitor of a long-running franchise it holds an important place in pop culture history.
