Time for Texas to address our orphan well problem | Opinion
, the regulatory agency with primary jurisdiction over the oil and gas industry, I believe this is a rare instance in which Texas should accept the federal funds set aside to accomplish these objectives, provided they do not come with strings attached.
I’m proud of the agency’s work to address this issue, but more can be done. The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act passed by Congress and signed into law last year invests $4.7 billion in plugging and remediating orphan wells nationwide. This federal infusion for orphan well plugging will go a long way to help Texas tackle the backlog of approximately 8,600 orphan wells currently on the books.
As a lifelong Texan and staunch conservative, I’m not one to advocate for accepting federal funds unless it is absolutely necessary because it too often comes with additional oversight or limits on how the state can utilize these funds.
