With some 160 colleges and universities in Pennsylvania, arriving at a new name for the merged Bloomsburg, California and Clarion universities took some time until they landed on one.
Pennsylvania's State System of Higher Education on Wednesday voted on a new name for these three state universities that are being combined into one institution.Pennsylvania has a Widener Law Commonwealth campus. Penn State has its commonwealth campuses. But the one thing a state with over 160 colleges and universities does not have is a commonwealth university.
The new name will remain in the background but allow the consolidated university to “legally and compliantly become one entity,” Hanna said. Jamie Martin, president of the Association of Pennsylvania State College and University Faculties, said her initial reaction is the new name “could cause confusion among prospective students and families when they are exploring their university options. All three universities have long histories and important identities within their communities. No matter what its name, each campus remains vital in its region.
The combined universities plan to admit their first classes of students this fall with the full implementation of their curriculum to be completed in 2024. In another matter, the system’s board approved changes to East Stroudsburg and Indiana universities’ tuition structure to revert to a flat rate for 12 to 18 credits that they used to have before IUP went to a per-credit basis in 2016 and East Stroudsburg offered its fixed tuition rate for four years through its Warrior Promise program.result in nearly a 20% reduction for in-state undergraduate students who take 15 credits a semester.
