New merchandise for ThorLoveAndThunder reveals that Valkyrie may be running New Asgard as a tourist attraction.
With just a few months until the theatrical release of Thor: Love and Thunder, a new piece of merchandise teases New Asgard as a monetized tourist attraction. Taika Waititi famously overhauled the self-serious Thor franchise with Thor: Ragnarok, awarding the God of Thunder with some much-needed levity. Waititi’s follow-up, Love and Thunder, is set to be released in theaters on July 8 and is one of the most anticipated movies of the year.
Thor: Love and Thunder will see Jane Foster lift Mjolnir and take up her ex-boyfriend’s thunderous mantel. Following the events of Avengers: Endgame, the film will presumably pick up with Thor abroad the Milano alongside the “Asgardians of the Galaxy.” The cast also includes Jamie Alexander as Lady Sif, Christian Bale as antagonist Gorr the God Butcher, Russell Crowe as the Greek god Zeus, and Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie—who now rules, or rather hosts New Asgard as king.
Despite being one of the funniest MCU outings, Ragnarok saw the destruction of Asgard, leaving Thor and his people to search for a new home. After Thanos attacked their vessel in Infinity War, the survivors established New Asgard in Norway, which is certainly a step down from the golden palace seen in previous films. New Asgard didn’t necessarily seem well off the last time audiences traveled there, and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Valkyrie monetize the destination as a tourist attraction.
Hopefully, the state of New Asgard can be further contextualized whenever Thor: Love and Thunder's trailer finally decides to drop. Given the film’s July release date, it seems likely that the trailer either drop this month or not long after the release of Multiverse of Madness on May 6. It’ll be interesting to see if New Asgard is thriving and why Thor inevitably decides to return. Other merch has teased that Gorr and may attack Valkyrie and New Asgard in the film.
