SF Giants, 12-2 in their past 14 games, take their hot play to the East Coast for six games and visit some familiar faces
Kevin Gausman will be on the mound, and Brandon Belt should be penciled in at designated hitter. No, this isn’t 2020 or 2021 at Oracle Park; it’s the Blue Jays’ expected configuration Tuesday at Rogers Centre in Toronto, where the Giants will see their longtime first baseman and shorter-lived ace for the first time since their departures.
“It’s playful. That’s how I see it,” Giants manager Gabe Kapler said of the prospect of seeing Belt this week. “He’s one of the funnier guys that I’ve been around. Very quick-witted. Even reading his quotes over the last few days, it’s been a lot of fun for me and I think everybody around here. Other than that, he’s just going to be another player in another uniform that we’re trying to get out.
The way it lines up, the Giants are scheduled to get the top of each team’s rotation. However, this year likely hasn’t gone how either club would like. The Blue Jays have a record only slightly worse than the Giants’ but are stuck in fourth place in the AL East, the toughest division in baseball. Their projected ace, Alek Manoah, is in rookie ball, but they’ve still gotten above-average performance from their rotation.
The season has been an unmitigated disaster for the Mets , who own baseball’s highest payroll but a record closer to worst team in the National League than a playoff spot. It hit a new low in the eighth inning Sunday against the Phillies, blowing a three-run lead while issuing three walks, hitting two batters, committing one error and allowing only one hit in an eventual 7-6 loss.
