This affection just raised $6 million for an app that helps treat addiction
Affect Therapeutics, a company working to treat stimulant use disorder through mobile technology, announced Tuesday that it has raised $6 million in a seed investment round. Investors in the round include City Light Ventures, Kapor Capital, Acumen, and AlleyCorp.
“The research for various stimulant use disorders has really focused on what is known as contingency management, which are incentives,” cofounder and CEO of Affect Therapeutics, Kristin Muhlner says. “What we're looking to try to do in leveraging contingency management is to reignite the reward system in the brain, right after the drug has been eliminated.”
The study found that Affect had a patient retention rate of 56%, compared to 23% for standard addiction therapy. Muhlner shares, “When we first developed the intervention, we realized that the sort of digital experience would be one that was highly engaging, and really can drive the reward system much like helping someone through a journey, or a lot like a game.” This led to the company reaching out to game designers to “think through progress and rewards… without infantilizing the process.
