If fashion can be considered wearable art, LVMH Prize finalist Duran Lantink's upcycles are wearable past narratives that he's carefully warping into avant-garde visions of your future self.

. A waterfall of plush pink curtains hung around us as we took a seat next to each other on crimson velvet chairs. The Dutch designer, known for his luxury upcycled “collages,” as he describes them, was spending two days in residence at theNomad Berlin pop-up, hosted by local fashion agency Reference Studios, and providing private consultations for a lucky few.

As we sat alone together in the shop’s backroom, however, Lantink’s environmental concerns felt far more personal. I presented him with a vintage quilted jacket first. It was a piece I initially bought for its Chinese cheongsam-inspired structure, as well as its silver luster, that recalled a plate of armor. Eventually, the piece had become tricky to style with the rest of my closet—it always felt generations removed from my uniform of black Adidas sneakers and mesh tops.

My second article, a marbled green silk Helmut Lang dress interpolated with black T-shirt segments, was one of the first designer pieces that I saved up to buy at Tokyo Joe on East 11th when I was attending college in New York. As a financial aid student at Barnard, discovering secondhand shops allowed me at least a superficial sense of belonging—especially among the girls toting monogrammed Goyard bags and wearing Stuart Weitzman knee-high boots to a 9 a.m. lecture.
