The Scotia Bar, originally known as the Scotia Inn, dates from 1792 and is in competition with the likes of the Old College Bar and the Saracen’s Head to be theDue to its proximity to the River Clyde, the Scotia was often frequented by sailors, shipyard workers and docks workers, as well as passengers on ferries that stopped nearby.Hall - later known as the Metropole - opened next door.
Arthur Jr quickly began to enjoy working in the business – in fact, he loved it so much that he changed his name to Stan Laurel and, along with Oliver Hardy, became one of the most renowned comedy icons of all time.outside the bar and in place of the former music hall. It became beset with controversies and problems in the mid-70s when it was alleged that a biker gang, the Blue Angels, ‘hijacked’ the pub. As violent incidents escalated, the pub closed its doors and would not reopen until 1987.Despite the previous problems, the Scotia successfully re-established its reputation as a pub for people with an interest in music and literature. Writers James Kelman and William McIlvaney are said to be regulars and the bar hosts regular live music nights.
The pub is rumoured to be haunted by both a ‘grey lady’ and a ‘green lady’. The former is a woman in a white wimple who sits at the bar or in the snug, while the latter is dressed in a green velvet dress and supposedly stalks the pub by walking up and down it.
