There's a growing disillusionment among some of AOC's supporters over how she has—and has not—used her massive platform since taking office

There is a growing perception among some progressives that Ocasio-Cortez is succumbing to the institutional pressures of Congress, going along to get along in the old Washington way. “I think she’s learning. She’s learning how to play the game. The problem is that the game is broken and that’s what even more devastating, she doesn’t see that and isn’t seeing the power she has to do more,” a progressive Democratic congressional aide told me.
, her genuine efforts to build relationships with her colleagues across the caucus and the aisle. But the question bubbling up is: At what cost? The reigning theory of political change among progressives is that it happens most fully when principles aren’t compromised. Some see evidence that AOC is not fully on board with this concept. The “yes” vote on a package of Internal Revenue Service reforms raised progressive eyebrows.
But the concern among her true believers is that Ocasio-Cortez has settled into a comfort zone where her principles will inevitably erode. “You had progressives ready to give their notice to work for her almost immediately because they thought she was the real deal that was going to bring change,” the progressive congressional aide told me. “They see that this beacon of hope is being corrupted by the system and the power that this place has to disorient those who want to change things.
It may also be that Ocasio-Cortez, who is 29 years old and grew up with social media, interprets her role differently than her peers. “She has a different theory of change than your average Congressperson, right? Some members have a singular focus of starting to work on getting a bridge in their district, and they have a 10-year plan for getting that bridge,” the senior progressive staffer explained. “I’m sure she’s doing that, because that’s just being a good member of Congress.
