In addition, given that clonal plants are typically smaller because their resources must be used to support both vertical and lateral growth, the researchers also sought to determine whether there were differences between clonal and non-clonal species in terms of bark production and bud protection, as well as whether maximum height correlated with the capacity to propagate clonally.

The study's authors were able to demonstrate that plant species in the Cerrado can grow rapidly and produce a lot of bark , while also developing below-ground organs that are specifically adapted to resprouting. In other words, they can avoid being burned by burying a significant percentage of their biomass underground.Due to these discoveries, they concluded that the plants have developed two different methods for resprouting from underground buds.
