Trump loyalist Michael Caputo is HHS’ new top spokesperson, as the White House tries to exert more control over its health department
on dialysis fluids as thousands of coronavirus patients develop kidney failure — a surprise complication that could foreshadow the next nationwide supply crisis, POLITICO’s Sarah Owermohle and Amanda Eisenberg report.
About one-fifth of patients in intensive care for coronavirus need kidney treatment, a development that’s forced federal agencies to discuss boosting imports of dialysis fluids. New York hospitals have separately met to discuss the dialysis issues, with some facilities facing shortfalls of both the fluids and trained nursing staff.
“I’ve never seen anything remotely like this,” said Alan Kliger, who chairs the dialysis and Covid-19 task force for the American Society of Nephrology. “It’s stressing the whole system.”The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention traditionally takes the lead in battling global pandemics. But it’sin the coronavirus fight — forcing other countries like China to step into the void.
The Trump administration has pulled back CDC staff and sought to slash its work around the world, POLITICO’s Sarah Wheaton, Ashleigh Furlong and Joanne Kenen report. That’s elevated China as well as the World Health Organization, the U.N. body that ended up in the president’s crosshairs over complaints it’s failed to hold the Chinese government accountable.
And while some public health experts say Trump may be right about the WHO’s deference, they also say it’s happened in large part because the administration allowed the U.S. to cede its global influence.
