Hong Chau praises co-star Brendan Fraser's performance in The Whale. The movie follows Charlie, an English teacher who lives in solitude. With Charlie's health deteriorating, he attempts to reconnect with his estranged teenage daughter, whom he abandoned several years ago. Over the course of The Whale, Charlie examines his relationships with four important individuals, including his daughter Ellie, his ex-wife Mary, his closest friend Liz, and a traveling missionary named Thomas.

Chau revealed that the most challenging part for her was when her character was unkind to Fraser's Charlie.
Hong Chau: Brendan is just a tremendous actor who hasn't had the opportunity to work on material like this. I'm so happy that it's happening for him now at this stage in his career. We had a three-week rehearsal process prior to filming, and that's very unusual for a film. That's when we really got to explore and bond with each other and build a lot of trust. It's so easy to love Brendan Fraser, so finding that friendship was incredibly easy.
In the 90s, Fraser was a rising star, proving his abilities as a leading man, although his most notable roles were comedic and action-oriented with George Of The Jungle and The Mummy franchise. The Whale shows off Fraser’s skills beyond comedy, action, or genre. The Whale, based on a play of the same name, demonstrates Fraser’s abilities with a stripped-down dramatic performance grounded in the relationships between each of the characters.
The Whale premiered at the Venice Film Festival and garnered a six-minute standing ovation. With awards season just around the corner, this may be Fraser’s chance to nab an Oscar nomination and fully establish not only his comeback but his evolution as an actor. Following The Whale Fraser will appear in Martin Scorsese's American Western drama Killers Of The Flower Moon and Max Barbakow's comedy Brothers alongside Josh Brolin and Peter Dinklage.
