. While there is no rulebook for navigating friendships and money, I do think knowing your own stance is fairly intrinsic to how you manage or even continue with certain friendships. After all, friendship might be free but the things we often do with our friends are not.

I explained that the last two times we went out together, she wanted to line split the bill – in other words, work out who had what. I had an extra drink so she suggested I put more in. Which of course I did, but I knew then and there, that this was our last supper. Context is important – this is someone who could afford it, she had chosen an expensive restaurant and she was a relatively new friend.

There are of course caveats. For instance, no one is suggesting that people on low incomes, or who are unemployed, should be forced into paying more on behalf of someone else. Under those circumstances, my friends and I make sure the restaurant we’re eating at is affordable. Or, . There are also exceptions regardless of income – for instance, if someone is going for an exceptionally expensive main that is £20 to £30 more, it’s reasonable to expect them to put more in. Similarly, if someone is not drinking – the drinkers would split the alcohol among themselves.
