Thanks to the spinoff series Dead City and Daryl Dixon, the Walking Dead franchise is finally running year-round, an achievement planned years ago.
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Thanks to its latest spinoffs, The Walking Dead has finally achieved what it planned three years ago: the TV franchise is running all year round. Based on the graphic novels by writer Robert Kirkman and artist Tony Moore, the original The Walking Dead TV series debuted with a six-episode first season in 2010.
In 2015, AMC premiered Fear the Walking Dead, a now-eight-season spinoff series that features new and returning Walking Dead characters. Five years later, the short-lived The Walking Dead: World Beyond aired for two seasons, followed by the 2022 six-episode anthology series Tales of the Walking Dead. Clearly, the zombie-infested landscape of the Walking Dead universe is rife with stories to tell and undead limbs to sever.
Originally, AMC planned to go big for the TV franchise's 10th anniversary in 2020. The plan had been to have some iteration of The Walking Dead airing new episodes all year round. For various reasons, including the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, that grand idea didn't pan out. Companion series Fear the Walking Dead had a viewership decline that mirrored that of the original series, though a new season is set to premiere in late 2023.
The Walking Dead Is Now Running All Year Round While AMC's year-round Walking Dead plan didn't come to fruition in 2020, the franchise is running all year round as of the 2023–2024 television season. In the summer of 2023, AMC premiered The Walking Dead: Dead City, a spinoff that centers on unlikely comrades Maggie Greene and Negan as they venture to the post-apocalyptic streets of Manhattan to save Maggie's son.
Fear the Walking Dead is slated to return for the 2023–2024 winter season, and then another new spinoff series will air after that. Set to debut in late February 2024, The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live centers on the original show's first protagonist, Rick Grimes , and his ally-turned-lover, Michonne . While not much is known about the show, there are plenty of popular Rick Grimes theories about his future role in the Walking Dead universe.
