“He has been so positive through this whole experience and even helped me feel comfortable in my decision to donate, whether I wanted to or not at the end of the day. And although this decision was to help give my dad a better quality of life, I really feel this was a decision to help my entire family,” she said.
Laura underwent electrocardiogram, or EKG, testing and magnetic resonance imaging, or MRI testing, to determine whether she was healthy enough to donate a kidney.By the morning of the transplant on June 6, Hemstead’s kidneys were down to functioning at only 8%. Kidney transplants have become far more common, and safer, since the surgical procedure was pioneered in the 1950s. The organ most commonly given by a living donor is the kidney, according to theMore than 2,300 New Jersey residents were on the kidney transplant waiting list in 2021, the organization says.
However, Hemstead will not be joining his wife, Kathy, and their three daughters at Cristen’s baby shower at a restaurant in Sparta.But, her father said he does not feel like he’s missing out. Far from it, he feels grateful to be awaiting the birth of his first grandchild.Bill Hemstead grew up in North Haledon, graduated from Manchester High School in 1976, met his future wife in classic New Jersey fashion — during a visit to the Shore — and has worked in construction.
