Standing still and hoping not to be noticed is proving to be quite a productive approach for Sir Keir Starmer - but it won't salve the deeper frustrations in modern Britain, writes wallaceme
It’s hardly a crime for a would-be prime minister to focus on getting elected. It’s not the whole job, but it’s the sine qua non of getting the gig in the first place. If you’re so obsessed with what you do once you’re in that you muff up the actual campaign, then that benefits nobody but your opponent.
Not whizz-bang, inspire a rally to roaring excitement; not even a guarantee of a standing ovation at our own party conference, to be honest. Less heart on your sleeve, more sleeves rolled up ., then voters will choose one or the other, probably with some degree of relief at the idea that the evening news won’t be such a pantomime any more. But I don’t think it will salve the deeper frustrations common to all sides of politics in modern Britain.
If the Government changes, but the experience of life and the frustrations many voters feel stay the same, and the promise that better management can sort it out proves to be a chimera, what then? If a managerial but Labour administration takes office only to find that their predecessors were bogged down by real problems and dysfunctions of the modern state, which promptly bog them down too, we should expect to see a rise in disillusionment.
