TOKYO—Team USA is a powerhouse at the Olympics. But when it comes to weightlifting, the Americans are weaklings.
An American man hasn’t won an Olympic medal in weightlifting since Mario Martinez took home silver at the 1984 Los Angeles Games. The U.S. women had a 16-year medal drought before Sarah Robles won a bronze medal at the 2016 Rio Games. Through the first five days of competition here, the U.S. weightlifting team has yet to win a medal, but there’s optimism that the Americans have put together a solid core for the future. Five of the eight U.S. team members are 25 or younger, with CJ Cummings the youngest at 21. At the age of 32, Robles is the oldest female on the squad and is back for another attempt at Olympic glory in the +87 kg. competition.
“We are the only nation other than China to bring a full team to Tokyo,” said USA Weightlifting CEO Phil Andrews. One reason is that it is on an aggressive recruiting drive to poach former college and even high school athletes from other sports.
