The Navy has no intention of replacing manned warships like this Virginia-class attack sub with unmanned vessels. But it thinks it can multiply the effectiveness of the fleet by combining high-end manned warships with low-cost unmanned warships.Sorting out all of the unmanned initiatives is not easy, especially given the propensity of military organizations to apply arcane nomenclature to new ideas.
This vision is not as fanciful as it may sound. Navy insiders say most of the relevant technologies for propulsion, communications and other vital functions are already mature.
