Residents living in on streets in Levenshulme have slammed Rishi Sunak's orders for a review of low traffic neighbourhoods (LTNs) in the UK 🚗

Residents living in on streets in Levenshulme have slammed Rishi Sunak's orders for a review of low traffic neighbourhoods in the UK and said the schemes have 'transformed' where they live.

The fight for safer, low-traffic streets in Levenshulme and Burnage was by no means easy. It was three years in the making and triggered a row between residents living on neighbouring streets who said they felt unheard and disproportionately impacted by the new measures. "We are all so much happier," she said. "It's a lot quieter. It was used as a rat run for drivers coming down from Slade Lane. I know Albert Road has got busier so people living there don't like it so much.

"It's such an increase in our qualities of life. I have lived here for 22 years and have seen all sorts of road rage incidents, a girl nearly got killed and a guy got his jaw broken. The Tories have seen that any measures taken against people using cars is unpopular. It's a political ball game." "But kids do still play in the street now more than they've ever done and more families have moved here. As a homeowner, I don't believe the scheme is a hindrance to drivers, it puts maybe an extra two minutes on their journeys."

He said: "I know from what my neighbours have said is that this street used to be a nightmare, people speeding all the time and traffic backed up. One of the reasons we moved was because I've got a young family and I can see that from the amount of traffic on Albert Road, it's made a huge impact. "Information about the scheme was scarce and we had people trapped in or wondering how to get to places. It has taken its time to appear on sat navs and has put more pressure on the likes of Albert Road."

"But this scheme should have been evidence-based, data-led and brought the community together with a proper consultation that was fair, but now we have division in the community.
