More than half of the Forbes 400 members with graduate degrees went one of these five schools, with Harvard University leading the way.
Going to graduate school could boost your earnings—to the tune of billions. Despite a few famous dropouts like Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg, nearly 80% of the billionaires on this year’s Forbes 400 list have a college diploma. And 40% of them even stuck around for graduate degrees.
No one has more degrees than H. Fisk Johnson. The great-great grandson of the founder of SC Johnson, and the company’s current CEO, Johnson has a master’s in physics, a master’s in engineering, an M.B.A. and a Ph.D. in physics, all from Cornell University. Meanwhile, media mogul Sumner Redstone went to Harvard Law School, as did real estate icon Mortimer Zuckerman and investors David Bonderman and Paul Singer. Jack Dangermond received a master’s degree in landscape architecture from Harvard Graduate School of Design in 1969, the same year he and his wife Laura founded Esri, an industry leader in Geographic Information System software used for creating digital maps. The business school reigns supreme at Stanford too.
Two cofounder duos met as grad students at Stanford. Sergey Brin and Larry Page started the project that would become Google while studying at the Stanford School of Engineering. They ran their prototypeon computers in their dorm rooms and both graduated with master’s degrees in computer science before incorporating Google in 1998. Jerry Yang and David Filo also met at the school, where they earned master’s degrees in electrical engineering but dropped out of the Ph.D.
