She famously cut up a $2,100 Prada jumpsuit into a crop top, fold-over micromini, and leg warmers worn with a pair of hotel scissors.
To anyone who had followed, it was probably just moderately shocking when she uploaded a video of her cutting up the $2,100 jumpsuit—after making the sign of the cross with a pair of hotel scissors. White’s cheerfully shambolic clip gained over 600,000 likes and 4.2 million views. “Most expensive five minute crafts ever,” read one comment. “My soul left my body… and slowly came back. I’m traumatized and loving it at the same time,” read another.
As soon as she saw the jumpsuit in the store, she saw the vision: a crop top, a miniskirt, and leg warmers. Doing it impromptu in her hotel room, in full glam, was classic White, and it also made the stakes seem higher. One wrong move and she’d have nothing to wear to the show. . It also meant she’d attend the show with fraying and imperfect hems. “A lot of people were like, ‘Oh, but the raw edges,’” White says. “And I’m like, ‘I’m going to go home and finish the edges.
Stunt-like though it may seem, White insists that she intends to keep her creation in her closet for years. “It was a beautiful, beautiful jumpsuit as it was. And I didn’t want to touch it unless I knew I was going to be able to wear it afterwards,” she says. “I can wear the skirt on its own. I can wear the top on its own.” She takes a beat. “Probably wouldn’t do the leg warmers—just, like, walking the dog.
At some point during our 50-minute conversation, White reveals two pairs of jeans she intends to combine into a miniskirt. Unsheathing her shears, she dives right into cutting the first pair of jeans. “These were my favorite jeans back in the day,” she says. Many of White’s videos are DIY sewing experiments or styling videos, where she either tries to reinvigorate something she “hates” or pairs “two things that don’t go together.
She acknowledges in the videos that cutting up her wardrobe is kind of contentious: A clip where she turns several pairs of tights into a ’90s-Chanel-inspired top opens with, “I feel like being controversial; let’s cut something up again.” Still, it’s fun to watch her look at her wardrobe with a verve and mischievousness befitting Willy Wonka. Jeans don’t have to stay jeans; a bundle of black tights, on camera, can become a runway dupe.
