The Oscar-nominated and Emmy-winning composer breaks down SuccessionHBO's beloved theme song
may not have come until season 2— say it with us, “L to the OG!”— but it was another rap from the HBO drama that helped inspire the iconic,says that he started by asking himself about the music the Roy family might imagine for themselves—“courtly, classical music.“ But he also saw early dailies of’s character Kendall Roy riding in a car and rapping Beastie Boys to himself.
Now we all know what that did sounds like— a theme song that‘s both intriguing and “off-kilter,” as Britell puts it, “like the family in the show.” In the video above he also breaks down some other themes in the show, and how they change in the second season.
He's as curious as the rest of us about what will happen in season 3, which is currently in the works. But though themay never change—nor would it to!—other musical elements of the show will. As Britell says, “I try to stay as open as possible to following where I feel the show is taking me, and how I might evolve the music along with it.”
