Allan Heinberg and David S. Goyer's take on Neil Gaiman's classic comic is a master class in adapting fiction to the screen
The Sandman. Tom Sturridge as Dream, Vivienne Acheampong as Lucienne in episode 110 of The Sandman.Netflix’s adaption of Neil Gaiman’s legendary comic,"The Sandman," is as close to perfect as anything could reasonably be expected to be. Star Tom Sturridge captures the otherworldly aspects of the eternal King of Dreams, Morpheus, while still managing to drop grains of humanity like sand from a clenched fist.
It’s impossible to overstate how Gaiman altered the course of comics with"The Sandman." Along with Alan Moore’s"Watchmen" and Frank Miller’s"The Dark Knight Returns,""The Sandman" paved the way for comics to tell adult stories. It was an issue of"The Sandman" that netted the medium its first World Fantasy Award for Best Short Fiction, the sci fi/fantasy equivalent of"Beauty and the Beast" being nominated for a best picture Oscar.
However, comic book movies were a strange genre at the time. As far as the early ‘90s were concerned, the only superhero worth a big budget was Batman. Most of what was getting made involved indie or lesser-known comics, such as The Crow, Tank Girl, and The Mask. Sam Keith, who contributed the creation of"The Sandman" as an artist, had a spectacular cult hit with"The Maxx" on MTV, but it was hardly what made investors want to pour out millions of dollars.
Elsewhere, Peter Jackson was starting work on"The Lord of The Rings" trilogy. Back then every fan was legitimately worried that"The Fellowship of the Ring" would tank, leaving yet another version of the classic story unfinished. That Jackson turned out to be both an effective midwife for Tolkien’s story to be born on film and an incredible enough director to lure audiences changed film for decades.
