The Greater Manchester estate 'riddled' with rats that left young family with no choice but to flee their infested home

Sitting in her new living room, Terene Shaw holds off tears as she clings onto two bags of receipts. It's the record she has of the meals her family ate and the buses to and from her children's school after they were made to spend more than 12 weeks in hotels.

Terene says it took six weeks from leaving the property before work began on it in May. Ultimately, she was in hotels for more than 12 weeks before she was found a new, smaller home when she warned Onward Homes about her mental health."I told my housing officer I didn't want to be in Limeside anymore," she said. "But that's where all our family and support are. My mum lives down there, she's 70.

Shane Crompton, a carer who works with Terene's family, was heartbroken to see the toll events took on the a woman he has known for around 20 years. "It was hard for me," he said. One Third Avenue resident, who asked not to be named, showed the M.E.N. a photo of a wire for her electric cooker which she says had been chewed through by a rodent. "I've had to go and buy a new cooker," she said.

One neighbour said she had bought a device which makes a high-frequency sound to try and put the rodents off her garden. Simon Heywood, another Third Avenue resident, said some rats managed to make their way inside his loft. "Then another rat was in the kitchen... I was a bit hysterical really." Neighbour Sylvia Hawkins said she had spent £120 trying to deal with rodents in her back yard.

"Our Neighbourhood Team has worked closely with Ms Shaw and her family throughout and we regret the disruption and distress caused. We have already agreed to reimburse all out-of-pocket expenses resulting from Ms Shaw’s stay in temporary accommodation and provided replacement furnishings and new white goods for her new home.
