★★★★ The Rhinegold at the London Coliseum is so damn good, it might just save the ENO ✒️ jessicaduchen
After last year’s uninspiring start to ENO’s Ring cycle, when plenty went wrong in, the tetralogy’s real opening opera. But this is different. The director Richard Jones doesn’t seem to create in-between productions: either it works or it doesn’t. This one really does. Rest assured that the nudity warning covers, ahem, only a few seconds.
Wagner’s magnificent mythical storytelling, an unbroken 160 minutes, is about corruption, deceit and lost innocence, issues as “relevant” as ever in 2023. The Nibelung Alberich steals magical gold from its Rhinemaiden guardians, and renounces love – the condition for forging it into an all-powerful ring. But the god Wotan wants the gold to pay Fasolt and Fafner, the sibling giants contracted to build his palace, Valhalla.
Jones brings fresh air and biting pertinence to the opera. With designer Stewart Laing, he creates a broadly futuristic setting for Wotan – the oak-toned John Relyea – and his gaggle of indolent fellow gods . Dancers and puppeteers incarnate the Rhine, manipulating the Rhinemaidens , an incel-like Alberich and a scarily infantoid heap of gold.
