White sharks on Cape Cod spend about half their time in water that is less than 15 feet deep, and mainly feed on seals. No one knows for sure why they sometimes attack humans.
Along with some other things that are too personal to talk about, I am afraid of brown bears, big cats, and white sharks. In the summer, I pretty much confine myself to the Northeast, where I am not likely to encounter any bears except black bears, which don’t frighten me, or any big cats, either. I spend time on Cape Cod, though, where white sharks are plentiful.
From Skomal’s research, I also know that Cape Cod is the largest aggregate site in the North Atlantic for white sharks. Skomal has tagged two hundred and thirty of them since 2009. He tagged fifty of them in 2019, and thirty-eight last year—because of the pandemic he wasn’t able to get as many days on the water as he would have liked. He started tagging them this summer in July, and so far he has tagged nearly twenty.
Before I go in the water, I also do a little arithmetic. I count how many swimmers there are and how many surfers, and I note how far out they go, then I position myself among them and use them as human shields. This is my last line of defense, and it may be feckless but it’s all I have. The water on the Cape is cold, so I wear a wetsuit. There isn’t any research saying that a wetsuit makes a white shark think that a person is a seal, but there isn’t any research saying that’s not the case, either. Skomal says that there isn’t really any research at all about what white sharks think. No one knows for sure why white sharks attack people, except to speculate that people look like seals to them.
