Ditto the 15 fascinating shelters which are scattered through the various gardens, ranging from the snug ‘Punch and Judy ‘shelter - a cosy fit for two - through a Mediterranean pergola-style structure believed to have been designed by the great Borough engineer Harry W Smith, also responsible for Peasholm Park, to an elaborately filigreed Victorian shelter attributed to Sir Joseph Paxton, best known as the designer of the Crystal Palace. Most have received smart new upgrades.

Another striking new feature is the reopening of an intriguing tunnel which links the north and south parts of the gardens divided by the South Cliff funicular lift, one of two still operating in the town – the tunnel runs under the lift’s rails. He also bought and sold property, and in the 1860s and 70s acquired several plots for development on the South Cliff, on one of which he built a home for himself, the Belvedere, which boasted a large area of the clifftop as a rose garden and a tunnel under the road from his house to give him private access.

The then Scarborough Corporation bought his Rose Garden in 1911 for the princely sum of £3,000 ; its recent revival has seen around 11,000 new rose bushes planted.
