My family has done okay with our traveling and vacationing—my wife Biba and I have taken our kids to the odd Caribbean island for a midwinter break now and again, and earlier this year I was, frankly, surprised at how well Esme and Guy took to. But when blue-skying a recent family getaway, I realized that something had been preying on my conscience: In our zeal to show our children the world, we’d been neglecting the riches closer to home.
Don’t get me wrong: They’ve skied in Vermont, we’ve beached it in Florida; Washington, DC remains a favorite escape for monuments and museums. But this feeling of mine was personal: I grew up amid the endless horizons of sunflowers and wheat of the North Dakota high plains, occasionally shipping out to my sister’s horse ranch in western Montana to help with haying—or simply to ride horses and ATVs around the northern foothills of the Rockies.
Then there’s what the Ranch’s owner, Jim Manley, did with all that terrain. In decades of exploring high-end travel options all over the world, I’ve never seen a place that melds the spirit of ranch life: rustic cabins, horses, vittles, campfires, freedom, self-determination—the whole yeehaw agenda, writ large—with exquisite service, across-the-board expertise, and the absolute pinpoint-perfect amount of indulgent luxury.
In short order, we walked five minutes down the path to the Silver Dollar Saloon and the Granite Lodge for a social hour and then dinner—Guy immediately hopped on a hand-tooled saddle to order a Shirley Temple; Esme headed straight for what may be the four most luxe bowling lanes in existence, followed by a spirited if shambolic family game of eight-ball.
