From a young age, this London-based photographer sensed that as a queer person they were never quite home in their native Russia.
Anya Gorkova grew up in Moscow understanding that they were different. From a young age, the now 24-year-old London-based photographer sensed that as a queer person they were never quite home in their native Russia. “When I’m looking back at my younger self, I realize that it was tough. I didn’t see it that way in the moment, but I had nothing to compare it to, so I thought it was normal,” says the 24-year-old Gorkova.
Photography was an outlet for the young creative. They’d spend time constructing the sets for their pictures, such as setting up a green screen to alter the background of the image. “I’d create fake environments. I’d photograph a guy in a pink suit and put him in a Barbie house,” they say. “I think I was trying to get away from the reality I was in.
Gorkova went on to ingrain themselves in the community and modeled in local queer projects, such as designer Ella Boucht’s graduation collection titled, “Butch”, which featured Gorkova and other members of the community wearing Boucht’s suits. “I felt like I was finally part of something bigger, like I had a family, even,” says Gorkova. “I belonged somewhere after being primarily lost for most of my life. It changed many things for me and helped me in a way that I could accept myself more.
